Launch-build note: The creator guide used here was uploaded on August 9, 2026. Exact frame values, damage, armor windows, and the number of charges needed for each state still belong in Training after a patch.
Hulk is not a normal run-up character
Hulk does not have an air dash, and his grounded follow-up is too slow for many of the roster-wide Light → Medium → Heavy → Assist routes. That changes the first goal: do not force the universal combo template onto Hulk and assume the same chase will work.
Instead, learn the character as a range-and-resource brawler:
- Use his strong Light and Medium buttons to check close and mid-range contact.
- Use Heavy for space and reward, but do not swing it repeatedly into empty space.
- Turn blocked sequences into distance with Thunder Clap so you can charge or reset the range.
- Build Gamma Level during a confirmed route or protected gap, then let the stronger armor and damage change the next decision.
Make the big buttons safe enough to matter
Violent Charge advances Hulk, but the guide warns that close versions can be punished. Practice it at the farthest range where the opponent cannot reach you after blocking. The test is simple: record the opponent's fastest Light and vary Hulk's starting distance until only the spaced version survives.
Thunder Clap is the practical pressure ender. On block it pushes the opponent away, giving Hulk time to create distance or begin Gamma work. It also functions as a combo ender on the ground and in the air. Do not treat it as a universal plus-frame button; treat it as a way to change the next screen state.
Gamma Spark is both a charge tool and a hit. The cited release-build guide shows armor through the animation, a hitbox of its own, an air version, and direct cancels from some specials such as Giant Stomp. That makes it a much better way to build Gamma Level inside a confirmed route than trying to charge raw in neutral.
Skull Crush covers the anti-air job and can feed combos. Hulk has no air dash to alter his jump timing, so controlling the opponent's jump with down-Heavy and Skull Crush is more important than chasing them upward.
Charge Gamma Level in the route, not in hope
The creator's central advice is to reach Gamma Level 2 quickly, then decide whether the corner or the match state allows a further charge. The third Gamma Spark activation enters Gamma Rage. In the cited video, Rage gives armor to Hulk's light Skills, improves the armor interaction so it no longer loses to lows, and upgrades the reward of his supers. It does not make Hulk invincible: throws and supers remain part of the defensive answer, and the held Heavy is not a guaranteed unblockable during existing blockstun.
Reliable charge situations include:
- A confirmed combo with an assist holding the opponent in place.
- A corner knockdown where the opponent cannot immediately reach Hulk.
- Giant Stomp after a protected interaction, when the opponent is watching the point character instead of the resource action.
- A Thunder Clap ender that creates enough distance to charge rather than continue swinging.
Do not charge in raw neutral against a character who can reach Hulk quickly. If the opponent is already beside you, convert the hit or call support first. The goal is not to display the maximum level every round; it is to earn the next level without giving away the current one.
The strongest conversion is often Gamma Spark → Gamma Rage → Level 1 Super. TrueUnderDawgGaming's release-build demonstration compares roughly 20,000 damage without Rage with roughly 30,000 during Rage; treat those numbers as a video observation to recheck after each balance patch. The same guide shows Hulk keeping his enhanced armor while he is called as an assist after activating Rage, which can make a tag or support call more valuable than staying on point.
Move properties worth putting in your notes
The following table is a compact transcription of the release-build demonstrations. It is a starting reference, not a replacement for the Training Mode frame display.
| Move | Release-build observation | First lab question |
|---|---|---|
| Held Heavy | A full charge puts the opponent into a rolling state. During Gamma Rage it gains armor and can be unblockable when the opponent is not already in blockstun. | Which corner and midscreen assists make the roll a stable pickup? |
| Giant Stomp | Full-screen knockdown that does not hit low; the airborne version keeps the same non-low caveat. | Can a projectile call or backdash be punished without giving up your charge route? |
| Thunder Clap | The strike and shockwave both destroy projectiles. The Medium version has armor; its air version can ground-bounce. Heavy can be pressed again for a second hit without extra meter. | Which version leaves a real pickup or enough space to charge? |
| Skull Crush | The guide shows armor on the Light version, extra damage but slower startup on Medium, and a fast Heavy version with a second-input ground bounce. Horizontal reach is limited. | What jump angles put the opponent almost directly above Hulk? |
| Violent Charge | Light is fastest but shortest and lacks armor outside Rage; Medium is slower with more range and armor; Heavy is fast, reaches well, and has a follow-up. All versions can be used in the air. | Which version is safe at your preferred spacing, and which wall route gives a transition or splat? |
| Seismic Smash | Medium is an armored overhead that launches; Heavy is also an overhead and can be pressed again for the full multi-hit animation. | Does the overhead route beat crouch block without losing the corner confirm? |
Build Hulk combos around his movement limits
Start with a simple route that ends in Thunder Clap or Gamma Spark, then add one charge point when the assist or corner makes it stable. Hulk's heavy body and slower chase mean that a route with a hard knockdown, charge, or wall position can be better than copying a long roster-wide re-jump.
Useful route questions:
- Can the first assist keep the opponent close enough for Hulk's next normal?
- Does the route end in a charge, or does it spend the time that Hulk needs to charge?
- Does the wall route leave Hulk close enough to use his armor, or does it reset to full screen?
- Is the damage gained from another heavy worth losing Gamma Level progress?
The practical beginner version is: confirm with Light or Medium, use one stable Skill, call the assist only when it gives a real pickup, and finish with the version of Thunder Clap or Gamma Spark you have tested. Add the flashy route after the basic route works from both sides.
Hulk lab checklist
| Test | What to record |
|---|---|
| Violent Charge | Maximum safe spacing against a fast Light |
| Gamma Spark | Armor duration, air version, special-cancel routes, and the activation that reaches each Gamma Level |
| Giant Stomp | A protected charge setup after knockdown |
| Skull Crush | Jump-in angles it catches and the conversion afterward |
| Gamma Level pressure | Which armored or overhead branches lose to throw, low, or invincible attacks |
Run the same tests with a projectile character on the other side. Hulk's plan is strongest when his armor and clap change the opponent's approach, not when he accepts a fireball war without a route through it.
