Build Combos That Solve the Match

Start with one roster-wide route, then spend assists and meter only when they improve damage, position, resources, or the next wake-up.

Launch-build scope: The route and resource behavior below come from launch-week training tests. Balance patches can change damage, meter gain, wall carry, and character-specific enders, so re-test the final route in Training.

Learn one transferable route first

Sajam demonstrates a basic structure that works with most of the roster after a small ender adjustment:

  1. Start with crouching Medium → standing Medium.
  2. Launch with down-Heavy, or jump directly when the starter already provides the right height.
  3. In the air, use Medium → Heavy, double jump, then Heavy → Heavy to spike.
  4. Call a Rush Assist, run forward, and pick up with Medium → Heavy.
  5. Repeat the air chain, but finish with the character's light wall-transition Skill instead of the final spike.

Doctor Doom, Magik, Green Goblin, Danger, and other unusual movers or command lists need a different ender or approach step. The structure still teaches the important rhythm: grounded starter, launcher, air sequence, assist pickup, second air sequence, wall transition.

Do not judge the route only by damage. A reliable wall break unlocks another teammate, restores an Assemble stock in the demonstrated launch build, and improves the team's options for the next interaction.

Read the combo-limit gauge, not the hit counter

The visible number of hits does not tell you how close the combo is to ending. Multi-hit actions may consume one input in the system, while certain auto-combo finishers or repeated actions consume much more of the limit.

The two most useful launch-build interactions are:

  • Enhanced/Heavy Skills pause limit growth while they connect. They also add juggle properties that can make a route possible.
  • Calling an assist reduces the filled combo-limit gauge. This is why an assist can create room for another normal and Skill sequence instead of merely adding hits.

Repeating the same enhanced Skill can force an early crumple in the tested build. Grounded and aerial versions may be treated differently, but do not assume a loop is legal—watch the gauge turn from blue toward orange and red while testing it.

There is also an overall combo timer. Even a route that manages the input limit can eventually end when it runs too long. Optimize for a useful result, not for the longest possible clip.

Spend resources that return value

Sajam's Spider-Man example shows why an enhanced Skill and one assist are often economical rather than wasteful:

  • The enhanced Skill costs Skill Gauge but adds damage, juggle time, and limit efficiency.
  • The Rush Assist costs Assemble Gauge but reduces the combo limit.
  • A successful wall transition restores team access and, in the cited launch test, replaces the Assemble stock used earlier.
  • The longer route continues building Skill Gauge, so the final meter loss can be much smaller than the initial cost suggests.

This is not permission to spend everything on every hit. Before extending, check whether the route will actually reach the wall, kill, unlock a teammate, or leave a strong knockdown. Save resources when the extension changes none of those outcomes.

The second cited combo-system breakdown notes that damage scaling follows the route's input progression, so high-damage attacks generally reward earlier placement. Treat exact scaling values as patch-sensitive; the durable lesson is to put the move that matters most where scaling has not yet become severe.

A ten-minute combo-building workflow

  1. Perform the universal route five times from each side.
  2. Replace only the wall ender with the correct Skill from the character's command list.
  3. Turn on the combo-limit display and note where it reaches orange.
  4. Add one enhanced Skill before that point and confirm that the route remains stable.
  5. Add one assist where it both lowers the limit and gives an easy pickup.
  6. Test from midscreen, near the wall, and with the wall already hardened.
  7. Record three versions: no resources, wall carry, and kill route.

If a combo only works from a perfect starter or one exact pixel, label it as situational. Your default route should survive real match spacing.
