Lab before ranked: These are launch-build observations, not permanent rules. Test the interaction with the current patch, your character, and the exact spacing before building a tournament plan around it.
1. Throws win the fastest close scramble
rooflemonger's launch measurements place universal throw startup at five frames, standing Light at six, and crouching Light at seven. At point-blank range, throw therefore beats a simultaneous normal Light. In the air, an air throw can also be the faster answer when the opponent is beside you rather than directly above your anti-air angle.
This does not make throw a universal mash option: jumps, throw protection, techs, and Assemble Counter all change the result. The useful lesson is to stop assuming crouching Light is always your fastest interrupt.
2. Spend meter to win a projectile clash
Normal projectiles generally cancel each other on contact even when their hit counts differ. The cited launch test shows an enhanced/EX projectile defeating a normal projectile and continuing forward. Characters that can convert the remaining hit at long range gain much more than a small fireball advantage.
Do not spend automatically. First identify whether the opponent has established a predictable projectile rhythm and whether your character can turn the clash into a knockdown, Super, or wall progression.
3. Read every Ultimate description
Several 100-meter Ultimates add a character-specific effect beyond cinematic damage. The video demonstrates examples that fill a personal resource, apply a status, or improve later attacks for the round. Compare the lasting value with the option to spend the same 100 meter on two Supers.
4. Use combat tags as live coaching
When the screen reports Overhead, Low, Armor, Invincible, Anti-Air, Slam, or another property, it is explaining why the interaction resolved as it did. Build a habit after every confusing hit:
- Read the tag.
- Recreate the short sequence in Training.
- Test one answer rather than replaying the entire match situation.
This is especially useful for distinguishing a missed block from armor or invulnerability.
5. Buffer a safe cancel after down-Heavy
Down-Heavy is the universal anti-air launcher. If the opponent blocks because your anti-air was late, the move may leave you punishable. The cited tactic is to buffer a safe-on-block Skill after down-Heavy every time. On a clean anti-air hit, the normal launcher sequence takes priority and the Skill does not appear; on block, the cancel changes the recovery situation.
This only works if the selected follow-up is actually safe at that spacing. Verify it with the frame display and a recorded punish.
6. Turn a raw tag into layered movement
A launch-build input-buffer technique is to initiate a raw tag, then enter a long-lasting projectile or Skill before the tag flash resolves. The outgoing character completes that action while the incoming character moves behind it, effectively creating temporary self-cover.
This is highly patch-sensitive and character-specific. Test whether the Skill persists, whether the tag is vulnerable, and whether the resulting pressure is real before using it outside Training.
7. Know what remains available at zero Assemble
The launch guides show reduced versions of some universal Assemble actions remaining usable below one stock. They keep the movement, armor, overhead, or projectile-invulnerable function but lose teammate follow-ups and much of the reward. Crossover Counter is different: it requires the stock.
The practical takeaway is to distinguish unavailable from available but weakened when reading an empty gauge.
8. Use Link Attack tracking to stabilize air confirms
Air Link Attacks adjust to the opponent's height more reliably than a manually timed sequence. When an awkward hit leaves the opponent above or below the expected route, continuing the appropriate Medium or Heavy Link chain can stabilize the confirm. Once the height is corrected, branch back into a character-specific ender.
This is a consistency tool, not always the maximum-damage route. Auto-combo actions also interact differently with the combo-limit system, so check the final reward.
9. Counter hits and crouchers can unlock routes
The launch analysis demonstrates two ways a normally invalid link may become valid:
- A counter hit supplies additional advantage.
- Hitting a crouching opponent can add a frame of advantage in the tested interaction.
That means a route recorded against a standing training dummy may understate what is possible in a real low-block punish. Test standing, crouching, normal hit, and counter-hit states separately.
10. Use Quick Skill when reaction speed matters
Command Inputs provide more damage and Skill Gauge, but they also take more input time. For a reaction punish—such as answering a predictable projectile with a full-screen invincible option—the one-button Quick Skill may convert a situation that the longer motion misses.
Choose the input based on the job: Command Input for planned combos and resource efficiency; Quick Skill for tight reactions and consistency.
