Carnage Guide Verified guide

Plant Necrosis Before You Spend the Opening

Carnage turns one Parasite Fang hit into a decision tree: tag a Skill, detonate Parasite Bomb, or use the status to make the next conversion hurt.

Launch-build note: This guide follows DarkSynth's August 9 release-build explanation and the published move list. Exact hitstun, damage, and assist timing should be rechecked in Training after balance patches.

Carnage is a status character with long hurtboxes

Carnage's central mechanic is Necrosis. Parasite Fang marks the opponent with the status; after a Skill connects, pressing the Unique button again detonates the Parasite Bomb. That detonation is the reason Carnage's pressure and combos do not look like a normal projectile character's routes.

His long normals let him contest mid-range, but the extended limbs also carry a hurtbox. Do not throw out a long poke simply because it reaches: a patient opponent can whiff-punish it, while a projectile character can make Carnage play from the wrong range.

Run the Necrosis loop on purpose

Think of the sequence as three decisions rather than one memorized string:

  1. Apply it: use Parasite Fang or a route that leaves the opponent in Necrosis.
  2. Choose the Skill: use Vicious Skewer to pull a marked opponent toward Carnage, Mutilate to wall-splat or launch, or a DP-style anti-air when the opponent jumps.
  3. Detonate or keep the route: press Unique after the Skill when the explosion gives a pickup or extends block pressure. If the status is not active, the same Skill has a different payoff.

The cited guide emphasizes that Carnage can cancel Unique into a Skill. That makes the timing worth drilling: apply the status, perform the Skill, then detonate before the opponent falls out of the route. The exact button rhythm depends on the Skill version and spacing, so use the in-game Combo Challenges as a starting point instead of copying a single video timing.

Take your turn with low-to-heavy confirms

Crouching Medium is Carnage's useful low and a practical way to take a turn back after an opponent's block string. Standing Medium reaches less far but can begin the same conversion family. From either normal, link into a tested heavy and Mutilate rather than improvising a long limb sequence.

Standing Heavy is a strong mid-range poke in the video guide. Use it at a range where the opponent cannot immediately punish the recovery, then confirm the hit into Mutilate or a Necrosis-aware Skill. Crouching Heavy is the main anti-air normal; the DP-style Skill is the second answer when the opponent's jump is already committed.

Guillotine Axe is the overhead branch. The charged version adds the hitstun needed for routes and can be used with Necrosis to create a larger reward. On block, call an assist before asking the overhead to carry the entire mix-up; the opponent should have to respect the assist timing, not only the slow button.

Build routes around the status and the wall

Start with these route goals, not a damage number:

SituationRoute goal
Poke confirmCrouching or standing Medium β†’ Standing Heavy β†’ Mutilate; keep the route stable from both sides
Necrosis confirmParasite Fang β†’ Skill β†’ Parasite Bomb; test whether the explosion gives a grounded or aerial pickup
Corner hitMutilate or Guillotine Axe β†’ assist β†’ heavy follow-up; preserve the wall rather than forcing a full-screen reset
Jump-inAnti-air normal or DP-style Skill β†’ Necrosis-aware extension when the status is active
Kill routeSpend Absolute Carnage only after confirming that the remaining health and stage position justify the resource

When a marked opponent is pulled by Vicious Skewer, let the assist hold them in place before adding another heavy. If the call does not stabilize the pickup, end in a knockdown and set the next Parasite Fang instead of dropping a flashy route.

Patch 1.2.2 combo lab: learn the stable pieces first

NovaZayn's August 10, 2026 [1.2.2] combo guide uses numpad notation: 5 is toward-neutral/standing, 2 is down, 6 is forward, and 214/236 are quarter-circle motions. The notation is player-side independent; 6 always means toward the opponent. Convert the route to Quick Skill inputs only after the manual version is stable.

Start with the pieces that survive most starters:

SituationStable first routeWhy it matters
Grounded confirmUse no more than four grounded normals β†’ 2H β†’ jump-cancel forward Heavy β†’ Heavy β†’ HeavyThe final Heavy sequence tracks Carnage back down for a reliable pickup
Skill starter214L β†’ the same launcher route; in the corner, test whether it wall-breaksA short Skill starter avoids filling the combo limit before the launcher
Far Light confirm5L β†’ 5L β†’ 2H instead of forcing 5M5M may not reach after a distant Light; 2H keeps the confirm honest
Necrosis pickup2U β†’ Assist β†’ 214M β†’ 5M near the corner β†’ 5HThe Assist creates room for the grounded follow-up while the status is active
Meter routeCharged 6H after 2H β†’ 236M or a tested Super enderHolding the Heavy adds hitstun and damage, but dropping a charge drops the route

The guide also demonstrates a Rejump using delayed forward Heavy β†’ Heavy β†’ Super Jump. Treat that as the next lab step, not the default match route. A stable route that reaches a wall or hard knockdown is more valuable than a difficult clip that only works at one height.

Spend Necrosis, assists, and EX with a plan

Necrosis changes more than the damage number. While the status is active, Carnage's Heavy attacks gain power, Skills can receive automatic follow-ups, and pressing Unique during a Skill detonates Parasite Bomb. On block the gauge fills partway; a combo fills it further, and hitting the opponent slows its drain in the cited build.

Use the system in this order:

  1. Apply Necrosis with Unique or a confirmed route.
  2. Choose whether the next Skill needs the Parasite Bomb detonation.
  3. Call an Assist before the combo-limit gauge is full; the source's tests use Assist to create room for extra hits.
  4. Take the wall break when it returns useful meter or team progress.
  5. Save double-EX routes for a kill or a route whose damage justifies the cost.

NovaZayn also reports that Carnage's EX DP can freeze hitstun decay at the end of a combo, allowing extra hits when the meter is available. This is a launch-build observation, not a guarantee that every EX DP route remains legal after a balance patch.

Make Parasite Bomb confirm the pressure

With Parasite Bomb ready, Carnage can self-confirm several pressure starters: after the overhead, down-down Medium, or down-down Heavy, press Unique again to detonate and route into the same combo families. That makes the opponent respect the status before an Assist even arrives.

Do not treat the DP as a universal pressure ender. The cited guide found Carnage's DP useful as an anti-air and practical for corner combos, but not a reliable midscreen conversion even with Parasite Bomb active. Keep the midscreen answer simple: anti-air, call support, or reset to a range where the long normals are safe.

Use the team to solve Carnage's bad ranges

The source specifically warns about projectile-heavy opponents and sticky rushdown. Carnage's limbs do not automatically win a zoning war, and a character such as Wolverine can stay close enough that the long buttons become awkward.

Choose a shooting or Assault assist when it helps Carnage cross the projectile lane or forces the opponent to block while Parasite Fang becomes safe. A conversion assist is valuable when the point character can mark the opponent but cannot reach the detonation pickup alone. Record the matchup and ask one question: β€œDoes this call let Carnage apply Necrosis without gambling his extended hurtbox?”
