Magik Guide Verified guide

Place the Portal Before You Ask for the Mix

Magik can play honest mid-range neutral or turn one knockdown into a portal decision; the winning habit is protecting the setup and choosing a route you can repeat.

Version note: Edo's ten tips were uploaded August 10, 2026. The portal and install concepts below are video-sourced; exact timer, meter cost, and advantage should be verified in the current build.

Start with the buttons that earn the portal

Magik's standing Medium and crouching Medium are the primary mid-range checks in the cited guide. Crouching Medium is a low that catches players trying to backdash or protect their feet. Down-Heavy and the DP-style Rising Soul are the anti-air options, while Jumping Medium and Jumping Heavy can contest air-to-air space.

Her special moves divide the work:

  • Demon Fire gives a quick projectile for neutral and assist snipes.
  • Soulsword Slice is the light pressure version, medium launcher, and heavy wall-splat route depending on the situation.
  • Demon Flame places a ground pillar at different ranges and can start an air route.

Use the light Soulsword Slice to end a blocked sequence when the pushback matters. Save the medium version for a confirmed combo unless the current frame data says the spacing is safe.

The portal is a decision tree, not a button you must always press

Dark Portal can be placed from several ground and air directions. Near a portal, Magik can teleport in front, behind, or above the opponent, then attack during the teleport with Teleport Slash. Selected Skills and supers can also be sent through the portal, creating extra timings for Demon Flame or pressure resets.

The first portal habit should be simple:

  1. End a combo in a knockdown or use Assist Rush to create time.
  2. Place one portal where the opponent cannot immediately hit Magik.
  3. Choose a single side and attack route that you can repeat.
  4. Add the alternate side only after the defender shows they are blocking the first one.

A portal without time is a slow button. If the opponent is already beside Magik, call support or take the grounded neutral interaction instead of forcing the setup.

Change ranges instead of living at point blank

The creator recommends moving between close pressure and mid-range control. Magik's buttons and Demon Fire let her punish a whiff without always committing to a teleport. This range change is important because a defender who only watches the portal can still lose to a normal, while a defender who only blocks grounded buttons can be pulled through a side-switch.

Practice a three-step sequence: medium check, light Soulsword Slice, then either retreat or portal with assist cover. The goal is to make the portal an earned extension of neutral rather than the only way Magik starts offense.

Spend Darkchild when the install can matter

Darkchild is Magik's install. The cited guide describes two spending levels, with the larger gauge investment giving a longer install window. During the state, Magik gains enhanced special versions and new combo routes; Queen of Limbo is tied to the install state in the source.

Do not activate it just because the gauge is available. Choose a moment when Magik can force a knockdown, finish a corner route, or convert a defended gap into a real sequence. Track the install timer even when Magik is tagged out, and do not spend the last seconds setting a portal that cannot be used.

Protect the setup with the right assist

The current tips recommend a shooting assist to clear or lock down the screen while Magik places a portal. Her own assist set also includes a projectile, anti-air, assault, and aerial option. Select the call that covers the setup you actually use:

  • Shooting for a full-screen portal placement.
  • Vertical when jumps are the main interruption.
  • Assault or aerial when the portal is already placed and the call must force a conversion.
